VC Action: Wallace Lloyd Algie, VC (June 10, 1891 – October 11, 1918) was a Canadian who was a 27 year old lieutenant in the 20th Battalion, 1st Central Ontario Regiment, Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War when he was awarded the VC for the following actions.
On 11 October 1918 north east of Cambrai, France. Lieutenant Algie was with attacking troops which came under heavy enfilade machine-gun fire from a neighbouring village. Seeing that further machine guns were being brought into position Algie rushed forward with nine volunteers and he shot the crew of an enemy machine-gun and then turned the guns and his own Lewis gun on the enemy. He killed a large number of the machine gunners who were moving forward enabling his party to reach the village. He rushed another machine-gun, killing the crew and capturing an officer and 10 men, thereby clearing the end of the village. Lt. Algie, having established his party, went back for reinforcements, but was killed when leading them forward. His action denied a portion of the village to the enemy and materially assisted his Brigade. |
